Services, Pricing & Applications for Research Center (SPARC)

Description:

A request management system for research services, resources and funding opportunities with enterprise-wide and multi-institutional capacity has been developed. As a web-based system, the software creates a consolidated and paperless process for search, requesting and obtaining pricing for research services, allowing researchers to spend less time locating and requesting services and developing a financial plan for their research. The system offers a personalized User Dashboard and Administrator Portal to manage and track their requests. Additionally, service providers are able to manage their catalog of services and pricing either across all of or for individual products. Future developments of the system aim to include the Study Tracker billing management system also developed by MUSC and a management system for pilot, trainee, scholar and other types of funding opportunities and awards.

Overview:

The behind-the-scenes, research administration work that underlies medical research is a critical part to the success of a research institution. While grant application systems have moved over to electronic management systems, billing and budget development processes have remained reliant on manual, paper transactions and constant communication between leaders of a research study, service providers and billing specialists. In order to begin a research study, a detailed budget must be established that encompasses all components for each step of the study. Compiling these ‘billing grids’ is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to human error. Therefore, a streamlined, electronic system for developing this research budgets that incorporates a centralized resource for searching for and requesting services will save the time of both researchers and research administrators while allowing more effort to be focused on the research itself.

Advantages:

Web-based, centralized, customizable portal consolidates process of searching and requesting services and creating a billing grid for research.
